Struck stages are the front half of the Erlang compiler, which 1.19 no longer needs.
Gleam 1.19.0 shipped on 5 October 2026 with a rewritten Erlang code generator. The compiler no longer writes Erlang source for the Erlang compiler to tokenise and parse again. It emits Erlang abstract forms, the tree that parser would have produced, and loads them directly, so line numbers in BEAM crash reports and stack traces now point at the Gleam source.
In the benchmark from the release post, 100 modules of 100 functions each, a full build took about 340 ms with 1.19 against about 430 ms with 1.17. That puts Gleam on Erlang ahead of Erlang itself at about 410 ms, because Gleam now skips the front half of the Erlang compiler. 1.19.2 followed a week later and fixed generated code for user-defined types that made Dialyzer crash.
As of 24 October 2026. Gleam 1.19 release post.
