one block per release, stacked by montheMudhra CA fixes, October 2026
Docker Desktop 4.96.3 came out on 22 October 2026, the third release in two days with the same fix: Docker no longer trusts certificates from a compromised eMudhra intermediate CA.
The notes for 4.96.1 and 4.96.2 say the fix "is being rolled out in batches as individual Docker Desktop components are updated", and the notes for 4.96.3 drop that line without saying the batches are done.
Docker Desktop has shipped 18 releases in 2024, 32 in 2025 and 50 so far in 2026, and no month this year has had fewer than four.
Arm still turns up in the fix lists: 4.81.0 on 6 July 2026 fixed a regression where Docker Desktop would not start on WSL2 kernels that could not attach its file-sharing eBPF probes, such as on Windows on Arm.
The MSI installer went generally available in 4.34.0 on 29 August 2024, and it comes up again in the notes of 16 later releases, most recently 4.95.0 on 12 October 2026.
4.96.2Removed trust for certificates issued by the compromised eMudhra intermediate CA.
4.96.3Removed trust for certificates issued by the compromised eMudhra intermediate CA.
4.96.1Removed trust for certificates issued by the compromised eMudhra intermediate CA.
4.96.0Fixed an issue where the error dialog could close unexpectedly on systems under memory pressure.
4.95.0Fixed the engine restarting right after Docker Desktop starts when an admin policy enables Enhanced Container Isolation.
4.94.0Fixed an issue where Resource Saver could pause the VM before the Docker API was ready, causing transient errors during engine startup or restart.
4.93.0CLI plugin updates are now managed directly from the app bundle and the Automatically update components setting has been removed.
4.92.0Updated containerd to v2.3.5 , addressing CVE-2026-53495.
03Resource Saver mode in Docker Desktop
Resource Saver stops the Docker Desktop Linux VM once no containers have run for a set time, 5 minutes by default. Docker says that cuts host CPU and memory use by 2 GB or more. It is on by default.
Change the idle timer, or turn the mode off, on the Resources tab in Settings.
For a timer the menu doesn't offer, set autoPauseTimeoutSeconds to any value above 30 in settings-store.json. Docker Desktop picks it up without a restart:
A moon icon in the status bar and on the tray icon shows the mode. Commands that need the VM wake it and take about 3 to 10 seconds longer; listing images or volumes doesn't necessarily wake it.
On Windows with WSL, Resource Saver only pauses the Docker Engine inside the docker-desktop distribution, so CPU use drops but memory use doesn't. Any enabled WSL integration counts as activity and keeps the mode from starting.
20 release notes since 2024 mention Resource Saver, the latest 4.94.0 on 5 October 2026.
The MSI package is the Windows installer for MDM tools and bulk rollouts. It only does all-users installs; a per-user install needs the EXE. Sign-in enforcement then makes users sign in as members of your organization before Docker Desktop works.
Install silently with a log, no reboot, and your organization required at sign-in. Admin rights are needed:
ALLOWEDORG writes the allowedOrgs registry key under HKLM\Software\Policies\Docker\Docker Desktop. ADMINSETTINGS writes an admin-settings.json, but only together with ALLOWEDORG: on its own the install succeeds, writes no file and reports no error.
Check your scripts and CI before rollout. While the sign-in prompt shows, docker run, pull, build and ps fail; docker version, info and login still work.
MSI installs turn in-app updates off by default. Set disableUpdate to false through Settings Management to turn them back on. Without /norestart the installer reboots the machine after a successful install, and a silent install doesn't ask first.
A new registry key, profile or registry.json takes effect at the next Docker Desktop restart. Sign-in enforcement is separate from SSO enforcement, which decides how users authenticate, not whether they must.
23 release notes since 2024 mention the MSI or sign-in enforcement, the latest 4.96.0 on 19 October 2026.
Build checks lint your Dockerfile and build options before any build step runs. They came with Dockerfile 1.8 and need Buildx 0.15.0 or later. A normal docker build runs them and prints the violations as warnings.
Run only the checks, without building. Unlike a normal build, this exits non-zero when it finds a violation:
docker build --check .
Make violations fail the build, or skip rules you don't want, with a directive at the top of the Dockerfile:
Add --debug (docker --debug build .) to get each rule's docs link and the offending Dockerfile lines.
Experimental checks are off by default. Turn them on with --build-arg "BUILDKIT_DOCKERFILE_CHECK=experimental=all". In GitHub Actions, docker/build-push-action 6.6.0 and later show violations in the pull request diff.
2 release notes since 2024 mention Dockerfile rules or build checks, the latest 4.35.0 on 24 October 2024.
Docker Desktop 4.96.3, released 22 October 2026 (release notes). It is release 50 of 2026.
How do I stop Docker Desktop using memory when it is idle?
Leave Resource Saver on. It stops the Linux VM after 5 idle minutes by default; change the timer on the Resources tab in Settings, or set autoPauseTimeoutSeconds in settings-store.json. On Windows with WSL it only pauses the engine, so memory isn't freed.
How do I install Docker Desktop silently on Windows?
Use the MSI as an admin: msiexec /i "DockerDesktop.msi" /quiet /norestart. Add ALLOWEDORG="your-organization" to require sign-in to your organization. The MSI only installs for all users.
How do I check a Dockerfile without building it?
Run docker build --check . with Buildx 0.15.0 or later. It runs the build checks only and exits non-zero on a violation. Add # check=error=true to the Dockerfile to fail normal builds too.

Don’t babysit your agents. Put them in sandboxes. Each sandbox is a microVM with its own kernel. And now they run in the cloud, too. Ready to try it out? New signups get $250 in Cloud Sandboxes credit. Claim yours before the promotion ends on October 31: https://www.docker.com/c/sbx-promo/
